After visiting this estate and its perfectly ruined garden, the auricula has got its hold on me. W & S Lockyer are a family run, independent, specialist nursery that was started in Surrey, in the late 1980s by Bill Lockyer and his then 13-year-old son, Simon Lockyer. Auriculas are a variant of the primrose, but a plant so hyper-cultivated that it must rank with the silkworm and the English Bulldog as the species that humans have manipulated to the degree that they can’t survive without our continued intervention. These theatres can be used indoors or outside in the garden. The auricula thing started a few years ago, after a flirtation with primroses turned into something more long-term but not really monogamous or committed.
